THE SABAUD RULE AND THE AUSTRIANS

1713 – 1720

During the first half of the 18th century, raged by the chaotic issues and consequences of the wars of succession, the island became a Savoy’s possession under Victor Amadeus II (1713-1720) who was made King of Sicily in  with the Treaty of Utrecht. However the widespread complain of the population (especially for the heavy tax burden) made the Spanish house come back to Sicily, even if, after the Treaty of The Hague (1720) and having been defeated by the English and the Austrian Army, they were forced to bestow the island to the Austrian Emperor, Charles VI. The Austrian ruled there until 1734.
