LEVANZO (AEGADIAN ISLANDS)
GROTTA DEL GENOVESE: it features Franco-Cantabrian rock engravings and some elements dating to the Upper Palaeolithic to the New Eneolithic. It displays carvings of men, quadrupeds, fishes and idols. Moreover, the archaeological excavations in this site brought to light some potteries from the New Eneolithic.
LIPARI (AEOLIAN ISLANDS) The excavations in the area where today rises the town centre retrieved painted and reinforced potteries, obsidian stone tools from the Neolithic period, impressive oval shacks and reinforced potteries dating from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age.
PANAREA (AEOLIAN ISLANDS) The island features the remains of some ancient settlements from the Neolithic period. Four sites have been retrieved in these areas: MILAZZESE, CALCARA, PIANO QUARTARA and CASTELLO; the Milazzese village, dating to the Bronze Age, is the most important. Some pieces of Mycenaean pottery were unearthed in the same area..
STENTINELLO (Province of Syracuse) A Prehistoric station in this area gave the name to the STENTINELLO CIVILIZATION that spread in most parts of Sicily at that time with little geographical variations (Megara Iblea, Tre Fontane, Cafaro). It is characterised by shacks enclosed by defensive trenches with dry-stone walls on the inner side. The excavations directed by Paolo Orsi brought to light a Neolithic-Prehistoric stratum containing silicon, obsidian and some arrowheads and fragments of different style of pottery (above all the thick walls variety which features a vertical order of generally geometrical elements).
PANTALICA (Province of Syracuse) Patrimonio UNESCO
It is the biggest rocky necropolis in Europe, a sort of oven tombs hive carved in the steep rocky walls along the Anapo river. The necropolis (500 meters a.s.l.) includes about 5,000 tombs carved with no particular order. The remains of the Anaktron (Prince’s palace) in the ancient IBLA (the capital of a small kingdom which lasted from the 13th until the 8th century BCE) are the only trace from the Sicel period. All the archaeological finds which have been retrieved are displayed in the Museum of Syracuse.
NOTO ANTICA (Ancient Noto - Province of Syracuse) It is located on a high plain of Mount Alveria, 15 Km away from the town. It enclosed many areas, extending to the sea, which were the centre of different civilizations. It was a flourishing handicraft and cultural centre, as well as birthplace of many illustrious men, philosophers and scientists. The archaeological excavations unearthed a Sicel necropolis dating to the 9th and 8th century BCE where funerary items, metal tools and potteries were retrieved.
Some interesting areas are located also in CALASCIBETTA (province of Enna) - the REALMESE necropolis (9th century BCE); SAMBUCA DI SICILIA (province of Agrigento) – Iron Age remains (shacks and necropolis); MONTE S. IPPOLITO (near Caltagirone) – Neolithic-Iron Age remains; CEFALÙ – 9th century BCE grottos containing tank covered in dolmen style.
